Product Description
Postinor is an Emergency Contraceptive Pill (ECP) which safely prevents unwanted accidental pregnancy within 72 hours after unprotected sexual intercourse.
How does it work?
Postinor prevents a pregnancy before it is established by preventing or delaying the release of an egg from the ovary (by preventing ovulation) with the help of a hormone called Levonorgestrel, the same hormone found in many regular contraceptives. It doesn’t work if you are already pregnant and will not harm an already established pregnancy. The sooner you take Postinor, the more effective it is.
After taking Postinor, you will usually have a normal period at the normal time. Sometimes, your period might come earlier or later than usual. Bleeding can also be lighter or heavier than usual. Or, you could have some spot-bleeding until your next period. Some women who take the emergency contraception pill will have their period more than 5 days late. If your period is more than 5 days late, see your doctor for advice.
Why is Postinor unique?
Postinor is effective to prevent pregnancy when taken as directed up to 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex.
Containing only one kind of hormone called levonorgestrel, Postinor prevents pregnancy before it is established. Postinor is a highly effective emergency contraceptive pill reducing the risk of unwanted pregnancy by 84%.
This type of emergency contraceptive pill has been widely used by millions of women since the 1980’s. It has a user-friendly side effect profile. Its safety is also shown by the fact that it is easily available in pharmacies for women all around the world.
Producer of Postinor is Gedeon Richter Plc. manufactures Levonorgestrel emergency contraception pills since the the 1980’s under the brand name Postinor and Postinor. By now Gedeon Richter Plc. has become a leading Emergency Contraception manufacturer reaching more than 100 countries with highest quality Emergency Contraception pills worldwide.
Is Postinor not an abortion pill”?
No, it is definitely not.
Postinor is an „emergency contraceptive pill” or „morning after pill”, that contains one common female hormone, levonorgestrel, a progestin. This hormone prevents pregnancy mainly by delaying or preventing ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovary), thus preventing fertilization. LNG EC has no effect on the inhibition of implantation, and do not interrupt a pregnancy (by any definition of the beginning of pregnancy), meaning that it has no abortive effect and will not harm an established pregnancy or the baby.
The „abortion pill”, (also called „medical abortion”), is a completely different drug. Abortion pills are used later and work in a different way: they stop the development of a pregnancy after it has been established. The abortion pill terminates the established pregnancy then forces the uterus to expel the products of conception. These drugs are approved for use in early abortions but not in all countries. Use of abortion pills is much more strictly regulated than emergency contraceptive pills. Unlike emergency contraceptive pills, abortion pills can never be bought without prescription in pharmacies.
When to take and not to take Postinor?
Postinor morning after pill is currently the safest way to prevent pregnancy after contraception failure or unprotected sexual intercourse, with low incidence of side effects. It is very unlikely that you will have any serious or long term side effects after taking Postinor. Usually you can carry on with your day as usual.
Do not take Postinor:
If you’re already pregnant, because it won’t work although it will not harm you or your fetus.
If you’re allergic to levonorgestrel or other ingredients in Postinor.
Postinor won’t protect you from HIV infection (the virus of AIDS) or other sexually transmitted disease (STD).
How to take Postinor
ay I wait 72 hours to take the pill?
Not at all! The sooner the better: The earlier you take the pill, the higher the chance to prevent pregnancy. Some people call emergency contraceptive pills “day after pills”. Well, you don’t have to wait until the day after. You can take Postinor Aftersex pill right away or use it up to three days after unprotected sexual intercourse or if you think your birth control method failed.
How to take Postinor?
Postinor is a single pill solution: only 1 pill, and you can easily avoid abortion. There is 1 pill in the pack. You have to take the Postinor pill within 72 hours of having unprotected sex. (For 2 tablets version of Postinor: take the second tablet exactly after 12 hours after the first.)
Take it as soon as you can, the sooner the better!
The sooner you take it, the more likely it is to work. Ideally, you should try to take the tablet within 24 hours following unprotected intercourse, as this is when it is most effective.
The efficacy of levonorgestrel Emergency Contraception Pills depend on how many hours have passed since you had unprotected sex:
• Within 24 hrs – 95%
• Between 25-48 hrs – 85%
• Between 49-72 hrs – 58%
If you’re worried about the possibility of an unplanned pregnancy, it’s important to act now rather than waiting till later.
How often can I take Postinor?
It’s not a regular method of contraception. Try to use it rarely, in emergency only. But never forget: it has much less side effects and health risks than abortion pills or hospital abortion.
Generally speaking you should not take it more than once within one menstrual cycle.
If Postinor is used more than once in a menstrual cycle, it is more likely to upset your menstrual cycle (period).
Postinor does not work as well as regular methods of contraception. Your doctor, practice nurse or family planning clinic can tell you about long-term methods of contraception which are more effective in preventing you from getting pregnant.
If you are pregnant
Emergency pills do not work if you are already pregnant and will not harm an established pregnancy or the baby.
If you think that you are pregnant, see your doctor or family planning clinic as soon as possible.
If you have already taken Postinor once since your last period and you now find you are pregnant, do not take Postinor again.
What to do if I vomit after taking the pill?
After taking the emergency contraceptive pill, a few women (approximately 1 out of 100) will be sick (vomit).
If you vomit within 3 hours of taking Postinor, you need to take another Postinor pill. So, go back to your pharmacist, doctor or family planning clinic for another packet.
If you are sick more than 3 hours after you originally took the tablet, you do not need to take Postinor again.
How do I know it has worked?
You will know Postinor has worked when you have your next period and it seems like a normal period.
When do you have to turn to your doctor?
• If your period is more than 5 days late, or unusually heavy or light.
• If you are still worried that you are pregnant.
• If you have sudden or unusual pain in the lower abdomen and your period is late.
• If you have any concerns about your health or about the methods of contraception that is most suitable for you.
