Product Description
Brand names: Diprosalic Ointment
Generic name: Betamethasone dipropionate
Manufacturer: Schering-Plough
Content: 15 gram
Description: Betamethasone dipropionate 0.05%, Salicylic acid 3%
USES:
This medication is used to treat dry, scaly skin conditions. Betamethasone is a corticosteroid that helps to reduce swelling, itching, and redness. Salicylic acid belongs to the same class of drugs as aspirin (salicylates). It causes the skin to shed dead cells from its top layer by increasing the amount of moisture in the skin and dissolving the substance that acts as “cement” between the cells. This effect helps to shed the skin cells, soften the top layer of skin, and decrease scaling and dryness.
HOW TO USE:
Use this medication on the skin only. Clean and dry the area to be treated. Apply a thin layer of the medication to the affected area and gently rub in, usually twice daily (in the morning and evening) or as directed by your doctor. Wash your hands after using unless you are using this medication to treat the hands. Do not wrap, cover, or bandage the area unless directed to do so by your doctor. Do not apply the medication in or around the eyes, nose, mouth, genitals, or anus. If you do get the medication in those areas, flush with plenty of water. Do not apply more often or use longer than prescribed because doing so may increase the risk of side effects. Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, use it at the same times each day. Tell your doctor if your condition worsens or does not improve after 1 week.
SIDE EFFECTS:
See also Precautions section. Burning, irritation, or skin peeling may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: skin thinning/discoloration, extreme hair growth, acne, “hair bumps” (folliculitis), stretch marks. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS:
Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to betamethasone or salicylic acid; or to other corticosteroids (e.g., hydrocortisone); or to aspirin or other salicylates (e.g., magnesium salicylate); or if you have any other allergies. This medication should not be used if you have certain medical conditions. Before using this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have: certain infections (e.g., viral infections such as vaccinia/chickenpox/herpes simplex, fungal infections, tuberculosis of the skin). Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: kidney disease, liver disease, poor blood circulation, immune system problems. Though very unlikely, it is possible this medication will be absorbed into your bloodstream. This may have undesirable effects that may require additional corticosteroid treatment. Children and those using this drug for an extended time over most of the skin may be at higher risk, especially if they also have serious medical problems such as severe infections, injuries, or surgeries. This precaution applies for up to 1 year after stopping use of this drug. Tell your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur: vision problems, persistent headache, increased thirst/urination, unusual weakness, sudden weight loss, dizziness. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details, and tell them that you use (or have used) this medication. Caution is advised when using this drug in children because they may be more sensitive to the effects of too much steroid hormone. Though it is unlikely to occur with corticosteroids applied to the skin, this medication may affect growth in children if used for long periods. Monitor your child’s height and rate of growth from time to time. This medication is similar to aspirin. Children and teenagers should not use this medication if they have chickenpox, flu, or any undiagnosed illness, or if they have just been given a live virus vaccine, without first consulting a doctor about Reye’s syndrome, a rare but serious illness. During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not known whether this drug passes into breast milk when applied to the skin. Because of the possible risk to the infant, breast-feeding while using this medication is not recommended. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS:
Your doctor or pharmacist may already be aware of any possible drug interactions and may be monitoring you for them. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with your doctor or pharmacist first. Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use, especially of: drugs that weaken the immune system (e.g., cyclosporine), other aspirin/salicylate products, other corticosteroid products (e.g., prednisone).
